iPrism 7.0 includes a new feature designed to help organizations control bandwidth consumption, which can help optimize network performance.
The Quotas and Warnings Feature allows IT administrators to define parameters for users' activities based on time or bandwidth use. Administrators can assign quotas to individuals or groups and schedule email alerts that keep users and administrators aware of Internet-related events.
This screen shot shows the Quotas and Warnings tabbed windows with the overview page selected.
Quotas generate a notification at a certain threshold of activity and then block the activity when the quota is reached.
Quotas are easy to add via the central management portal. The Quota-Add window is pictured at the right. You can enable a quota, set the duration time and tell iPrism when to email a warning to users. Warnings can educate users regarding their Internet use and over time, may modify their behavior.
Quotas and warnings are attached to ACLs within web profiles.
Warnings allow the administrator to define categories that will be allowed by policy, but are not business related, to receive a "soft block". This means when first accessing one of the categories defined in the warning they will receive something similar to a block page that includes a "Continue" button. This serves as a pre-emptive warning to the user that the activity is not considered business related and will logged by the administrator.
When users have reached their quota and try to access a restricted site, they get an error message that Quota has been reached.
